Hero?

It has been 20 years since the death of He Who Must Not be Named. However not a day goes by that the loved ones, wrongfully killed during his brief time in power, are not missed and thought of. For some the pain of that time has never lessoned. They have picked up the pieces of their broken lives , put on a brave face and tried to continue with their lives. The memories for them are just as fresh as if it were yesterday.

Andromeda Tonks is 74 years old now but remembers the last war as if it were yesterday. She is the mother of Nymphadora Tonks and aided Harry Potter with one of his many escapes during that time. “She hated her first name.” Mrs. Tonks explains with a fond smile as she looks at a picture of Nymphadora, her husband Remus Lupin and their only child Teddy Lupin, taken right after Teddy’s birth. “Everyone who knew her called her Tonks.” she recalls as a tear rolls down her soft wrinkled cheeks. “She was an Auror. Both her and Remus were in the Order of the Phoenix.” Andromeda told me proudly as she passed me the picture. “This is the only picture of them with Teddy that was ever taken.” I took the picture and looked down at the happy family. “In a time when the world seemed to be in such trouble the birth of that child must have given everyone so much hope, and reminded them what they were fighting for.” I found myself musing aloud. “Yes he did that. He brought joy back into our life. I like to think he gave everyone the strength to keep fighting, when things seemed so lost.” Andromeda smiled at me. “Can you tell me about those days? I would love to know the part you played during that final war.” I asked with so much awe in my voice it took her by surprise. “Yes I will tell you what little I did. All I ask is that you see me as me. I am no hero, they were the ones who died fighting, and the brave people who fought along side Harry Potter at Hogwarts.”

She feel silent then as she closed her eyes and thought back to that day. I waited patently as I pondered what she had said. I decided to wait till I heard her story before I passed judgment on if she were or were not a hero. When she spoke it was in a strong voice, stronger than any 74 year old I know, as if remembering gave her the strength to relive those painful days. “It was a few days before Harry Potter’s 17th birthday. The Order had to move him before his birthday before the enchantment that was placed on the house broke. Dora and Remus came to Ted and I. They were chosen so that any Death Eaters who followed would not get suspicious. Remus explained to us that the needed a safe house for Harry to go to until he could take a portkey to the Weasley's. We of course would be given all the protecting the Ministry and the Order could put together." she recalled. I watched as she stared off into space, recounting the details of that day. "Dora of course was worried about us, but she respected us enough to let us decide. I don't think she was surprised when Ted agreed." she said as she turned to look me in the eye. "things happened quickly then, the spells and enchantments were put into place quickly, time was not on our side." Andromeda explained. "The night he was to come Ted and I waited impatiently for them. We knew Harry was to come here with Hagrid. But not all of the plan, we also knew both Dora and Remus were going to be involved and in danger." She looked at her folded hands that rest in her lap. Her gold wedding band still on her left hand. "We sat here on the sofa holding each other's hands as we waited, then we heard the sound of Hagrid's motorcycle. Ted was faster than I he was out the door first. I could hear someone calling out for Hagrid from the garden. I yelled at Ted and he found Harry there unconscious. Harry wasn't very big and Ted was able to lift him and bring him inside with little difficulty. He had to be very careful as Harry had a broken arm and ribs." she continued. "While Harry was unconscious he went back out and found Hagrid. I was tending to him when Harry woke. We thought they had simply crashed, until Harry told us about the Death Eaters." Her voice held strong, never wavered as she told about that day. "I tried to finish tending to Hagrid but he would not wait to see for himself that Harry was alright. Nearly broke every bit of furniture in here in his haste." she explained with a smile. "Then Harry saw me." she paused then as a look of sadness crossed her delicate face. "He went for his wand thinking I was Bellatrix. Ted was calm as he explained I was his wife, and gave Harry his wand. Harry apologized of course and seemed to really look at me. I am not sure if he could tell the difference but he did relax." she looked me in the eye as she mad a single statement about her sister. "I am nothing like Bellatrix, we may look a like and share the same blood, but I am nothing like her." I knew from the tone in her voice that she did not want to talk further about her sister, so I did not push. "I asked him about my daughter. He didn't know what had happened to her and a look of pain shot across his face." she continued right where she left off. "I thought he was hurting and was about to ask him when he said he needed to get to the portkey so he could get to the burrow. I thought he just wanted to get away from me because of the resemblance." she scuffed. "But he shocked me when he said he would send word or Dora would. He felt guilty that she was in danger and that we were so worried." she explained before her eyes turned to the doorway that lead to the back of the house. "Ted lead them to our bedroom and showed them the portkey, they only had three minutes before it left. Harry thanked us for everything we had done just before he left." Andromeda finished. "He didn't need to thank us, we did it because it was the right thing to do. We knew what would happen if something happened to Harry." she explained with a level hard look in her eye.

She took a moment as a tear slid down her face. "When the death eaters came around Ted ran to protect himself. He was eventually found and killed." she recalled the pain fresh in her heart even over the twenty years. "When the final battle was at hand Dora was here with Teddy and me. But she couldn't stand to be left behind and not be with Remus fighting." she turned to the door as if she were seeing her daughter for the last time. "I took Teddy as she kissed him tenderly while he slept in my arms. She brushed his hair from his face and looked me in my eye. The last thing my daughter ever said to me was Protect my son mom, and if I don't come back tell him how much I love him and his father. I love you. Then she was gone." The tears poured down her face freely and she got chocked up. "I buried them all together, funerals fit for the hero's they were." she continued as she looked up at me. "I am no hero, but I am honored to have played a small part in the down fall of he who must not be named."

After my interview with Andromeda I sat down to write her story down. I thought about all she had told me and all her family suffered during that dark time. She did something few did or would have and she doesn't even know it. Doing the right thing isn't always easy, but doing it makes you a hero.
